In 2005, the All-American Rejects emerged as consistent pop-rock hitmakers with three consecutive hit singles from their album Move Along. The title song, in particular, has become a memorable and enduring, even moving, recording. It should come as no surprise, then, that the band's first single from their upcoming album When the World Comes Down is instantly engaging and sticks in the memory like bubblegum.
For their third studio album, When the World Comes Down, All-American Rejects switched producers from rock hero Howard Benson to Eric Valentine, perhaps best known for producing a series of Smash Mouth hits and managing Good Charlotte. The shift in producers is immediately obvious in the band's sound. Gone are thrashing pop-punk sounds in favor of a soul-pop vibe that will be familiar to Smash Mouth fans.
However, the band gives its own twist to "Gives You Hell." The lyrics are filled with a cleverly snarky attitude. The attitude of "Dirty Little Secret" is here in full force, and you will likely find yourself singing along. If the chorus wasn't catchy enough, the band accents the point with a crowd singalong to close out the track.
Fans and critics alike should not look to All-American Rejects for cutting edge innovation. However, the band covers the pop-rock basics exceptionally well. Look for All-American Rejects to head back to the pop top 10 with ease. - Bill Lamb, About.com
